If any of you have gone down to the woods lately, the woods being the Johannesburg CBD you will have come across a relatively new venture called Work Shop New Town, which if summed up in one sentence, is a really awesomely designed warehouse space that houses over 100 local designers showcasing and selling their products.
The actual building that Work Shop New Town exists in a massive potato shed that was built in 1911, photos of what this place looked like before are so interesting . The architects have used the space beautifully filling it with pockets of interest here and there and creating architectural pieces that are very pleasing to the eye.
I really like this concept and this space and I think the tenants that they have chosen are really cool. You will find some of the usual (but still interesting) suspects, but then there are also a few that you may not have known about. I know I spotted a couple that I hadn’t seen before, which is always awesome! Some of the stalls I really liked where African Image, Crystal birch, Dr Pachanga, Maxhosa by Luaduma and Wolf and Maiden.
There is a dim sum restaurant called Town that you can frequent within Work Shop as well a massive restaurant right next to it called The Potato Sheds that serves food designed to fill your bellies, burgers, ribs, slow cooked pork, that sort of thing.
The space is interesting and fresh and definitely worth a visit or two. I’m really looking forward to more things like this popping up in town, there are lots of future plans for this area that are looking really exciting.
It’s open Monday-Saturdays from 10am-6pm and Sundays from 10am-3pm.
Address: Gwigwi Mrwebi St & Miriam Makeba Street, Johannesburg, 2113
