High Tea – Four Seasons Westcliff

High Tea - Four Seasons Westcliff-1

A few days ago my friend Gina and I went for High Tea at The Four Season Westcliff. We were shown upstairs to The View restaurant and seated at a table on their balcony which offers you a view of Johannesburg like no other, it’s uninterrupted, vast and it’s accompanied by a cake stand full of sweet and savoury goodies that will have you smiling like someone who’s had way to much happy gas.

The menu for High Tea is set, you get five sweet and five savoury items per person and on this particular day we were treated to an Apple and Pear Afternoon Tea, which included Raspberry Poached Pear and Chocolate Tarts, Homemade Pecan Praline Scones, Apple and Pomegranate Verrine, Mascarpone and Pear Cheesecake and Apple Cinnamon Palmiers, which were all really delicious. My favourite were the Palmiers and the Pecan Praline Scones, which I scoffed down with honey whipped butter. Holy Moley.

On the more savoury side of life we were served Carmelised Onion Tarts, Homemade Bagels with Salmon, Cream Cheese and Apple Salsa, Mature Cheddar, Pear and Rocket Sandwiches, Spiced Lamb Samoosas and Black Pudding and Roasted Apple Empanadas. Everything was so good, the only thing I didn’t like was the Cheddar, Pear and Rocket Sandwiches, they were a bit plain and not really my cup of tea.

Speaking of tea they also offer a very interesting loose leaf tea selection which includes Black, White, Red, Green and Blue Tea. I ordered a cup of Blue Tea called African Ball, which was seriously so tasty, it had the most amazing smell and taste and it complimented the platter so nicely.

I don’t know about you guys but having someone serve me cake while I lounge in the sun sipping on some bubbly is my kind of awesome. If you want to do something nice for yourself or someone else then treat them to a High Tea at the Westcliff, their stomach and eyes will be so glad you did. It does come in a bit pricey at R395 per person, but for something special and different it’s so worth it.

Address: 67 Jan Smuts Ave, Johannesburg, 2132

Definitely need to check this out. Recently went to high tea at the Saxon hotel and was extremely disappointed with the savory selection. Also for the price – the second course of just scones with jam, cream and cheese seemed very average. The sweet course was delicious, but one good out of three courses is not great odds .

      Hi there

I must say I had such a good experience and the savoury stuff landed up being my favourite part and I’m very much a sweet perso. I wish someone would come up with an affordable High-Tea like a Medium-Tea because I also always find the prices too high.

I hope if you land up trying this one it doesn’t disappoint 🙂

Wow! Looks like a huge improvement on the “old Westcliff ” which was a bit worn out and weary.
High tea is such a treat. Is the bubbly included for that price – as it is quite steep. I can also recommend Burkleigh House . A hidden gem in the largely un-gentrified suburb of Ferndale. This four star luxury guest house really knows a thing or two about putting on a show for high tea. Becoming quite popular for bridal and baby showers. So lovely in the gorgeous garden setting. Lovely reading your blog!

      Hi there Susan,

The new revamped Westcliff is pretty amazing, they’ve gone all fancy and pretty.

Thanks so much for the recommendation, I’m going to try give it a go, sounds really nice and I’m all for people knowing a thing or two about a High-Tea 🙂

      Thanks for the comment
