Starling & Hero

November 25, 2011

There is a lovely local company called Starling & Hero Bicycle Company. They upcycle bicycles and make them look like something you would probably shoot yourself in the face for, which wouldn’t be ideal because you wouldn’t be able to ride it, but you get what I’m trying to say.

What’s cool about Starling & Hero is that you can pick every part of your bike from what colour you want the seat, the fenders, the frame, then bell, if you want a wicker basket (obviously you want a wicker basket), you can together with them design the whole thing right off their site and then they take whatever you have given them, whether it be your old bike, or just a vintage frame and turn it into a shiny piece of magic awesome.

I have been chatting to them lately and seeing as it’s it’s nearly Christmas time and seeing as I have such amazing readers/followers who have supported me and my Lucky pony through so many blog posts, Starling & Hero, Lucky Pony and Wolves would like one of you to HAVE the beautiful limited edition Starling & Hero/Wolves Cafe upcycle that you are looking at right now. Yes this bike could be all yours.

Unfortunately this giveaway will work a little differently to the normal ones that I run, seeing as the prize is so physically big.

1. You can only enter if you live in South Africa, as I’m not sure how the blazers I would get it over to anyone overseas, so so sorry. Unless you come fetch it (for reals).

2. If you do win it and live anywhere other than Joburg where the bike currently lives, you will have to make your own plan to get it. Whether a friend picks it up from Wolves and sticks it on a plane with them to take it to wherever they’re going in the country (which is pretty easy to do), or your mom/uncle/cousin owns a courier company or a really big truck that they can use to transport it for you, you will have to make a plan.

3. All you have to do is leave me a comment and visit the The Starling & Hero site to see all the other cool bikes they have built.

4. If you Tweet or re-blog this post, which I’m hoping you will do, please will you include the links in your comment to me, so it’s easier to keep track of your entries.

5. The giveaway starts today and ends on the 16th of December, which is the last day Wolves will be open till next year. The Starling & Hero/Wolves Cafe upcycle will be hanging up in Wolves, so you can come and fetch it on that day or we will keep it for you for as long as it takes for you to make a plan to come and get it – nice hey?

6. Good luck and I would like to openly say from now, that I hate whoever is going to win this bike because it is flipping awesome. Love you guys.

Just by the way this is the frame I gave Starling & Hero. Did I hear you say ‘wow’? These guys are so good, so if you are looking for someone to vintage you up contact Emile on

This is the raddest giveaway ever! I would do anything for this bike!

I remember one day late in November when this beauty was still standing outside at Wolves I was sitting right next to it admiring it in all its glory. Then all of a sudden a friendly ginger guy interrupted my reading and offered me a lift home, because it was getting dark and I shouldn’t drive my (hopefully) bike down Corlett. Point being we would make a lovely pair, people have been commenting about it for ages!

  • Jess November 25, 2011 at 8:10 am

  • Maike McNeill November 25, 2011 at 8:14 am

Dear Angie and sweet friends from Starling & Hero.
For my b-day this year my father gave me his vintage bicycle that he’s had since he was 8.
He knows my heart so well.
You might think that it’s a small bike, but in fact in the olden days folks would buy their kids a big bike and make them ride it forever. Makes sense. There are scratches on the centre bar from where my dad would balance a metal milk bottle between his legs on his way home from the corner cafe to the farm he grew up on. ( just a sweet story to make you go ‘aw’).
My husband and I have been saving up and we almost have enough money to bring it to Starling & Hero and let them do their magic and turn it into a shiny piece of awesome. You see, if this bike had been a tandem bicycle I wouldn’t be writing you this letter. But it’s not a tandem bicycle. Which is why I hope that I can win this bike for my husband (and blue is his favourite colour – I’ll just have to snatch the basket off and put it on mine). We will then cycle hand-in-hand with our pretty new old bikes into the sunset all the way back to our sweet home in Cape Town because we don’t have a mom/uncle/cousin who owns a courier company (oh and on the way we will also be practicing all the no-hands moves the sweet friends from Starling and Hero demonstrated in their awesome video. I am especially excited to try out the Tea one).

Thank you and all my love,
    Maike McNeill

  • Amy November 25, 2011 at 8:15 am

angie nooooo this is too good!
I want this bike, like alot.
I’m sure everyone does, but listen everyone, im 21 (going on 22) and don’t have my drivers yet. YES you heard right. and now i understand that this was not due to my laziness, no, but rather some force telling me not to do it because sometime in the not so distant future I would be gifted with this marvelous little guy!
Who am I to say no to destiny?

If that’s not enough, I have some other reasons too 🙂
    1. It will look awesome in my new little house and live a happy little life on the wall next to my fireplace
    2. It can even make an appearance in a shoot, and go on to live forever digitally!
    3. It can cycle me to vovo telo each morning and meet all the other sweet bicycles from the neighborhood (also, it will prevent obesity from eating vovo’s daily)
    4. I have a kitten called Basil who I think will enjoy riding around in the basket 🙂

I’m going to go blog about this now 🙂 xx

  • Tracey November 25, 2011 at 9:19 am

My colleagues in the office are now looking at me oddly – I suppose caressing your laptop screen lovingly while sighing deeply is a little odd. This bike is just too gorgeous.

Having had my car written off by a drunk Matric student and now having dented my courtesy car, I feel like the universe is trying to tell me that I shouldn’t drive, but cycle… (Nudge nudge, wink wink).

  • martha November 25, 2011 at 9:36 am

OK wow this is so beautiful and I suddenly want one so much that I will actually learn how to ride a bike simply for the privilege of riding on one of these. Yes. You heard right. I will learn how to stay upright on one of these monsters, something I still haven’t figured out how to do. Talk about commitment.

  • Becky November 25, 2011 at 9:39 am

Damn son – is this for reals?!

Ooooooh it’s so lovely. Too lovely. I happen to love everything about this beautiful bike and would love to look after it and show it the world as long as it may live. What a wonderful idea.

Also, the Starling & Hero website is stunning – I know very little about building bicycles but if I did I would totally want to work with these guys. They are obviously legends.

I adore the other bikes displayed on their site, especially Persephone, Shamrock and Poppy (aah they even give them names!) but not nearly as much as I love this Angie-commissioned one.

    I’ve blogged about this:

    Pinned it:

AND Tweeted about it: @lauraanne89: @miss_luckypony Beautiful #Upcycle bike from Starling & Hero ( – so lovely!

    Oh yes.

  • Maaike00 November 25, 2011 at 2:18 pm

I’ve been wanting a Starlin & Hero bicycle for a while now, in fact I’ve been wanting any type of bicycle….
I keep being invited to Critical Mass Pretoorland ( but can never go because I don’t have two wheels you see.

I tried to fix up my sis’ purple old bicycle, one of those sparkly glitter mountain bikes (yep, that’s how keen I am to ride again :P) but as I lack the Starling & Hero skills when it comes to upcycling my bicycle i’m at a loss!

So here’s a solution to my problem…Let me ride the streets of P-town city centre and I’ll be one happy chappy!

Here’s my twitter, it tells the same story in fewer words 🙂!/maaike00

okay so WOWEEEWEEE . . . WEEEEWEEEEWOOOOW!!! These bicycles may be the best thing i’ve gandered all week – and i do have quite a wandering eye:) I was literally just thinking i should really get a bike for the holidays (last year – my thrifty dad decided my bike – which i’ve had since i was 12 – was taking up space in the garage so alas it was sold – so there i am back from varsity digging in the garage for my once beloved yet slighly neglected purple racer only to discover “oh ja your bike – i sold it months ago”) sooooo long story short – really like really really would loooove to be zooming around on that beauty of a machine – and this time to ensure its safety i would lug it to grahamstown – and make all the other kids jealous with my obnoxious bell and basket combo:)

I don’t ride bicycles. Except that I did in my dream last night. Which was weird in itself. But, hey, the flatmate said she’d like a bike and if i won this and gave it to her she’d owe me dinner forever. Probably.

  • Megs November 28, 2011 at 11:13 am

So, I almost shouted as much profanities as I did yesterday when I stepped on a bee, when I saw this bike! Makes sense, read it twice.

My birthday is this Saturday and I think this would be the most amazing glitterballs present ever! (no relation to Edward Cullen this statement has). Also, I just bought my firstest house/home evaar, and its not too far away from my work, so I could put pedal to the metal and cycle to work everyday, and get a free work out. Yay!

And lastly, but not leastly, my bike was stolen. My awesome bike that I had since school days. Ooh, if I get hold of that vagrant! So, this is alll the reasons why I should win this bike.

Thanks Starling & Hero, thanks Lucky Pony and Wolves for this giveaway. Asem!

I live in Joburg. I love it here. But I study in Stellenbosch. I don’t like it much there. I’m collecting as many beautiful things from this lovely city as I can before I go back next year to soften the terrible homesickness. Also to show those Cape Tonians what they’re missing (they just don’t seem to get it, do they?). It would be beyond awesome if this upcycle could form part of my goodie bag.

  • Katherine November 30, 2011 at 10:56 am

Oh my. This bike is fantastic. Mine was stolen and I just haven’t been able to get another. This would bless my life. I could even stack really small people in the basket and give them rides. That or my puppy.

  • Dan November 30, 2011 at 11:09 am

There are 9 million bicycles in Beijing – and none at my house.
    That’s a fact…
    A sad one

  • megan November 30, 2011 at 11:29 am

Dear Angie, Wolves and awesome Starling & Hero!

What a giveaway! Best one up to date!

I’m not living in Joburg anymore, but is coming for a long holiday in February and will return to SA in two more years, so I’m allowed to enter. I will literally come and pick it up in SA. I can’t wait for my next piece of Wolves cake and coffee, who am I kidding I think SA wine would be in order!

I love wolves, I can’t find anything similar here 🙁 but luckily I will see you in SA soon. I truly hope that the wheel have turned since then and that I win this lovely form of transport. My car was stolen last year in one of the street parking spots opposite Wolves, while having a lovely breakfast one Saturday morning! True story…so lets see.

With my wheel turning and everything I blogged, tweeted and did a FB post just to make sure that I win this. hihihihi. See links below.

    Love Elouna

  • Lukas December 12, 2011 at 1:55 pm

By my Lucky Pony this is good luck!

Did you know by a seemingly unrelated series of events that started more that started almost a year and a half ago this bike and I have crossed paths?!

It sounds crazy, right? But my girlfriend and I will be travelling to a wedding in the City of Gold this Friday! From the Mother City! It’s basically a marriage of two cities, which sounds very similar to the novel by Charles Dickens – A tale of two Cities.

Now you and I and you the other person reading this, we can surely not deny this series of events anymore than we can deny that we breathe.

I therefore implore you dear Lucky Pony to bestow this human transportation device on my Jessica (she’s from Team Jess btw that will cycle the Argus next year for charity if she won this bike..hint hint).

Jessica is my fair lady and this this is a bike for a fair lady indeed!

  • Jess December 12, 2011 at 2:05 pm

Ladies, that is my dashing boyfriend above and i will glady exchange him for the bike!! He is very handsome, with perfectly formed curls and best kind of broad mouth. He’s great at giving piggybacks and we often do a dying swan routine so he has muscles. He’s generous and will pay for your dinners, a bonus that even my fair bike cannot contend with. Angie, he’s yours for the blue steel! xxxxxx

  • Sid December 12, 2011 at 6:37 pm

  • Yolande' December 13, 2011 at 6:03 am

I will move to Rosebank (currently Paulshof) just to be able to ride that bike. Love it!And love your blog!

  • Mpho December 13, 2011 at 7:09 am

“they’ll see me rolling, and be hating…. ‘coz that Pony is too cool for school!”

  • Syllable December 13, 2011 at 7:14 am

Oh wow! I’ve tweeted but hopefully no one will read my tweet so that there’s not a whole lot (more) entries and I can win 😛

  • Bela December 13, 2011 at 7:17 am

Why travel on 4 wheels, when you can travel on 2 wheels look ultra stylish and cool.
It’s all about being eco friendly and just living life on a awesome bike.

I’m a mountain biker, so anything on two wheels is a 10/10 for me.
Love the bike, love your web site.

Good going guys, keep up the good work..
Thumbs up to you all (“,)

    I can’t afford a carriage.

    But I’ll look sweet,

    Upon the seat,

Of a bicycle made for meeeee!

    Yipppeeee! I’ll call her Daisy.

  • Sam Schwarer December 13, 2011 at 8:34 am

Oh my goodness I want to win this so badly. I’ve been salivating over the Starling & Hero bikes for ages and there’s just no way I’m going to be able to buy one for myself in the forseeable future. Unless I take my kids out of school and save all the fees, uniform and stationery money, and that’s apparently frowned upon. Sigh. What an awesome giveaway. Thanks so much to Wolves and to Starling & Hero for giving us this opportunity.
FB’d the giveaway on If one of our followers wins it I’ll kick myself.

  • Sam Schwarer December 13, 2011 at 8:41 am

Oh, popped it on our blog as well. I’ll hope for extra credit, but mostly I did it because I had to share how totally cool this giveaway is:

  • Lisa Johnston December 13, 2011 at 8:59 am

I LOVE these bikes, please, please dear Santa, Lucky Pony and The Starling and Hero can you win me one for Christmas. My bike was stolen a few months back and my feet are getting mighty sore.

  • Jess December 13, 2011 at 9:27 am

My feet are twitching under my desk!

  • Zozette December 13, 2011 at 9:38 am

Oh Goodness. There is no way I could possibly ask you to pick me among this sea of convincing comments.
But I will say; should you choose me to be the one to take home this beautiful bike, I promise that I will love it and look after it like I upcycled it with my own hands. This labour of love deserves a good home, with an owner that will cherish it forever. At my hands, this bicycle will never need to be upcycled again – but should it need some maintanance or new accessories- Sterling and Hero will be my first phonecall.
I’d love to put some red velvet cupcakes from Wolves in my little basket, visit my friends and show them how positively rad I look. (And then give them each a cupcake.)
Consider your lovely giveaway retweeted and the Starling and Hero site bookmarked. (Lucky Pony is already one of my usuals.) – @zozette is me on twitter! Much love! :]

  • Frances December 13, 2011 at 10:19 am

  • Chad December 13, 2011 at 2:45 pm

Okay, I have a serious case as to why this bike needs to be mine.

    1. Isn’t it time a boy won a prize on luckypony? I think you might be a boyophobe. Just sayin’.

    2. It’s blue. Blue is for boys, no?

    3. It’s Christmas-pie season and this ass isn’t going to defend itself.

    4. I tweeted. See?

  • Tom December 14, 2011 at 8:53 am

I really like the skillful way they repainted the wall and repaved the bricks for the before / after pics, as well as transforming the bike so very remarkably beautifully.

Give me this bike so I can give it to the one I love.

  • Michele December 14, 2011 at 9:39 am

Oh, you are the bestest. Serious.

  • Zelda December 14, 2011 at 9:52 am

Mine comes in the form of a poem that sort of rhymes here and there…I’m no poet so forgive me.

Little miss Lemon Drop (not her real name)
and her dear Bottlepop (this is her real name),
fell down a rabbit hole…oh you’ve heard this before?
Feeling dizzy with her hair more than a little frizzy…
    she followed a bunny,
    had a tea party,
    met a queen
    and awakened from the dream.
Autumn leaves stuck in her hair
the smell of cupcakes in the air.
    Something’s a miss…
    There’s candy floss and lollipops,
but where is her dear Bottlepop?

  • Jess December 14, 2011 at 10:57 am

Obsessively checking my emails! 🙂 x

  • taryn December 14, 2011 at 3:06 pm

This is the life I can offer bike.

A flat ride to work, along the sea, on a specially made bicycle path built by HZ.
It will sleep easy at night knowing it saves at least 15k’s of CO2 a week.
It will have loads of bike friends. (Capetonian bikes are actually very friendly)
It will spend its days sitting in the sun in the Waterkant center, where blue vintage bikes are admired more than the tight asses they create.

I know what I would want if I was that bike.

  • Jacqui December 14, 2011 at 5:08 pm

I love it…. the perfect ‘e’scape goat from the ordinary…. out of the city …. &
Cycle off into the sunrise and hide in a meadow with ur wheels and a good book (or iPad)!

  • David T December 15, 2011 at 9:57 am
