Philip Barlow

February 27, 2013

These very unique paintings are made by Mr Philip Barlow. They’re like scenes from a movie shot long distance on a really hot day and I love how he has such a unique way of turning ordinary scenes into pieces of beautiful art.

– My inspiration, and challenge, is to create visual documents that reflect my Christian faith – the beliefs and values that define me. Using everyday scenes, I explore illuminated moments within our seemingly ordinary lives.

Although I work within a long tradition of landscape painting, my depiction of the ‘seen’ landscape is simply a vehicle through which I navigate territory of another nature. A landscape less ordinary; where the line between the physical and the spiritual realm has seemingly been removed. However, these scenarios are not intended to be of a surreal nature. Hopefully they will seem curiously familiar and convincingly real.

The figures in the landscape serve as carriers and reflectors of the light that falls upon them. Bathed in the luminosity, it is my hope that they would become more beautiful. To me, light is the ultimate subject because it embodies the pinnacle of all reality.

Philip currently lives and paints in Noordhoek, Cape Town. He is married and has two children and a dog.

Wow, so beautiful! With Winter coming on I feel like I need to buy at least 5 and hang them up all over my flat and it’ll take me to my happy, summer place.
