We went to such cool restaurants in Japan, like this unassuming udon noodle place which was shown to us by a friend the boys had made over there. Chihiro said it was one of her most favourite restaurants to eat in and I totally understand why. At this place they make the udon noodles from scratch and they have a tempura selection that will have you hyperventilating from excitement. How it worked was, you ordered the basic dish at the front of the shop with the guy below, so it’s udon with broth and pork or beef or egg etc etc and then you head off to the tempura section and load your plate up with all sorts of wonderful things, squid, chicken, aloe root, potato, prawns, deep fried eggs, baby marrow (I’m mentioning like a 3rd of the selection). You then go find a place to sit and you sip on a beer or a coke while you slurp (slurping was big in this place) down probably the best bowl of udon noodles ever. We went back to this place 3 times, that’s how good it was.

This restaurant was also in Shinjuku, if you ever want to go I could always ask Chihiro for directions xx

Yes I’m back from amazing Japan, I have been there for the last 12 days so I’m super sorry for the lack of posts around these parts. But I’m back now and ready to show you guys some of the amazing places I went to.

I’m not sure how many of you have been there before, if you have gone then you will now what I mean when I say that Tokyo is truly one of the best cities I have ever visited and Japanese people are one of a kind in terms of how friendly and accommodating they are. I couldn’t believe how no matter what time of the day you went into a shop or restaurant (and things stay open late), everyone was always friendly and attentive. The city is clean and no matter who does what it always looks like they take their jobs and positions very seriously and complete them with the utmost pride.

Restaurant time: Stretta

Over the weekend my mom and I drove to Natal to go to my cousins wedding. It was such a lovely affair, there were a lot of Greeks so that meant a lot of food, Greek dancing and plate breaking. It was too much fun, I haven’t danced that much in ages. Anyway on Sunday we drove through to Durban to see my aunt and another cousin (I have a lot) for lunch and they took us to such a cool little place called Stretta in Hillcrest (Shop 215C, Heritage Market, Old Main Road, Hillcrest, Durban). It’s a pasta, pizza, beer swigging joint that has been designed so nicely in black, white and wood. The minute I walked in my eyes lit up, such nice little design touches here and there, it seriously made the design nerd in me smile (designed by Kevin Boyd)

We all had different pastas (I forgot to take photos of the food, sorry) and wine and the food was really nice. I would say swing past if you’re ever in the area, it’s a cool spot with good food and they even have beer tasting evenings which you can sign up for, which sounds like fun.

Restaurant time: Daleahs

daleahs-14

There is a new little spot that has opened up in Braamfontein called Daleahs. It is owned by the sweetest girl, named Daleah and her space is very very cool. It serves breakfast and lunch and cakes and coffee and her mini slyder burgers are amazing. So if you are in the area you must definitely stop in to say hi and to stuff your mouth full of something tasty.

You will find it just opposite 70 Juta Street Braamfontein in a bright green building that you can’t miss.

Restaurant time: The Pitstop Diner in Honeydew

May 6, 2013

After the Winter Sculpture Fair we all decided to try find a little spot on the way home for another bite to eat. We were all feeling like hamburgers and hamburgers are what we got, well those and some crazy Elvis action too. We couldn’t find anywhere that had space for us, all the restaurants were fully booked and so on the road back home we spotted this little roadside diner/bar named the Pitstop Diner that had a few bikes parked outside of it. It was cladded with old signage on the outside and the yard was full of vintage cars, petrol pumps and bikes, so we decided to stop. We were glad we did, even though this place was understaffed and full of hungry people, the inside was so charming and they had an Elvis impersonator which made us feel ok about the delay with our order, that and the fact that when we did get our burgers and chips they were huge and flipping delicious.

500 Hundred at the Saxon Boutique Hotel

You know having a blog is so nice, you get invited to events and you get spoilt and it’s really really cool. Sometimes I go to these events and sometimes I don’t, but last night I went to the Terenzo Hairdressing International launch at the Saxon Boutique Hotel and Spa. I popped on my fanciest Jane Sews and I headed over. I have never been to The Saxon before and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Wow, it is huge and it is lavish. Good Lord. I can’t believe that part of that place used to be the owners house before it was a hotel.
