This beautiful, light and bright space is a weekend retreat that belongs to Melbourne interior architect and designer Shareen Joel. I love everything about it, the openness created by the natural light and use of white and timbre floors and then the darker spaces too, like the bathroom and outside shower. It’s situated near the beach and I can only imagine that it’s surroundings are as beautiful as this little holiday nook.
This is quite a cool project called From Cover to Cover by designer Jenny Volvovski. It’s an ongoing project whereby she designs new covers for books after she finishes reading them. She has given herself a few limitations so that they look like they are part of a series – I like them a lot.
– I think a lot about book cover design while I am reading, and thought it would be a nice exercise to recreate the covers of books once I finish reading them. I decided to set a bunch of limitations for the covers because I wanted them to look like they were part of a series (at least somewhat). The rules were – green/black/white for color, Futura/typewriter/handwriting for text, and scans/drawings/photography for the image. Sometimes I didn’t follow the rules exactly.
Cool spaces: Leah Fraser and David Shrimpton’s house
July 24, 2013I love going onto The Design Files for inspiration, they often feature such cool homes on their site and this one is no exception. It’s the home of Leah Fraser and her partner David Shrimpton. Their house looks like it full of beautiful solid antiques accompanied by many of Leah’s artworks and I love how the space is surrounded by the characteristics of old houses, dark wooden floors, pressed ceilings, chandeliers. wooden doors and window frames. I also looked up her portfolio and her art is as beautiful as her home. I have included some of it in this post.
– This home basically reverses the trend of transforming terraces into small white modernist boxes. When David first took possession of the property 5 years ago, it had already received the obligatory modern renovation treatment. ‘He basically gutted it and restored it in a Victorian style’ says Leah. ‘The inspiration was a traditional Sydney Victorian terrace – taking ideas from Sir John Soane and Victor Horta‘ Leah explains. David was intent on recreating the grandeur of Victorian times – re-instating cornices and ceiling roses using original Victorian moulds, and salvaging antique doors and windows to complete the look. Floorboards were replaced with salvaged tallow wood. Layer upon layer of detail was added – from Victorian era paint colours to vintage lace curtains, giving this home an incredible sense of history, otherwise seen only on a film set!
I have only just recently discovered the work of FriendsWithYou. I was on a poster site the other day and I came across a set of illustrations (see below), which I thought were really fun. Then I looked up the artist, which just happens to be 2 people, Samuel and Arturo, 2 people who make such fun and imaginative stuff. ALL THE TIME. I looked through their portfolio and came out smiling in the end. It looks like everything that they touch is made with one objective in mind and that is fun. Wish I could work on projects like this all the time.
I pulled some of their work for you guys to have a look at. Enjoy.

Saw this fun photography site which is dedicated to the ampersand on Curious Constellation’s blog. There are endless possibilities, hope the lady who started this doesn’t give-up on this fun project too soon.
Shane and I have just recently bought a new flat that we are moving into at the end of July. We are super excited about it because it’s our first purchase and it’s the first place that we’re going to get to add our own ideas to. I will be taking pictures of it before and after, so you’ll get to see all the progress…The place has already been renovated, but we’re going to be changing a couple of things.
One of the things we are wanting to do is add some patterned tiles to the kitchen and bathroom, BUT finding cool tiles is like finding a unicorn alive and well grazing in a field of golden dreams and happiness. We went into a bunch of different tile shops only to be bored to death by beige and terracotta, there is a small selection of mosaic tiles here and there that are quite nice, but where be all the patterns damn it?!
Can anyone point us in the right direction?
I have added some reference pictures of the type of stuff we’re looking for, have any of you come across any of it? I would really appreciate any help…
