Where neon signs go to die.

June 14, 2012

Have any of you heard or even better, been to The Neon Boneyard in Las Vegas? I came across this place last night and I almost rolled off my bed with excitement. I think old neon signage like this is one of the coolest things man has ever come up with and this place in Vegas saves it from being lost and forgotten/destroyed. They collect old neon signage, some pieces are donated to them and others are literally rescued from buildings being torn down.

None of this stuff is for sale, which would probably drive me nuts if I ever got to actually see this magnificent place in real life. I think if I was ever to plan some sort of robbery in my lifetime, this would be my target. Only crap thing is, once I’ve plugged all my ‘loot’ in back at the hide out, I would pretty much be screwed.

If any of you have ever been to this museum, please leave me a comment telling me what it’s like in real life. I would love to hear about it.

– The Neon Museum/The Neon Boneyard was established as a non-profit organization in 1996 to collect and exhibit neon signs, the classic Las Vegas art form. The collection boasts over 150 donated and rescued signs. The core of this collection is contained in the Neon Museum Boneyard, a rambling park approximately two acres in size. Signs featured date from the late 1930s through the early 90s and represent motels, local businesses, and celebrated casino resorts from throughout the Las Vegas Valley.

Me me me I have been there! That shoe is one of my favourite things in it. It is an incredible place. We went to Vegas and got married in Feb 2010. My husband’s best friend Leslie is a photographer and she suggested we rent the place to take some pictures http://sakuraphotography.com/blog/weddings/las-vegas-wedding-sam-and-scott/ – pretty exciting.

It is regarded as a dangerous place because America are very scared that everyone is going to hurt themselves and sue all the time, and there are a lot of topple-able things and sharp edges. So you have to be supervised by their guy the whole time. I would be impressed if you were able to steal anything though – in the area where we were though, everything is Vegas-style l.a.r.g.e and from hotels and what not.

    You should go!
