What do you do when you find yourself with two friends in a restaurant that serves Asian inspired fusion tapas made from freshly sourced Asian and local ingredients? You ignore the fact that your stomach is (apparently, but definitely not in my case) only the size of your fist and you order 13 dishes made up of all sorts of amazing things that will make your head spin with happiness.
Urbanologi is located at the 1 Fox Precinct in Ferreirasdorp smack bang in the middle of the Mad Giant Brewery. So not only do you get to enjoy the culinary masterpieces that come out of Chef Jake’s kitchen, but you get to wash it all down with some amazing locally brewed beer.
Ok guys, I’m not going to lie we may have overdone it when it came to ordering, so expect a flood of photos, but we will in no way admit that we weren’t happy that we did because we seriously had some of the tastiest dishes, which included everything from Charred Beef Cheeks, which was a first and definitely not a last for me, to Beetroot Tartare. I mean we ordered so much that we had zero space for dessert and that never ever happens. We were quite bummed as they all sounded so good!
The space where Urbanoligi and Mad Giant are found is huge, you walk in and feel like you’ve almost stepped into a very well designed factory that is being guarded by a gold one-eyed Yeti. There is loads of seating inside and out so it can get pretty festive, which is nice if you’re looking for an afternoon/evening out filled with good food and atmosphere.
Urbanologi’s menu is seasonal and all these dishes below make up their new Winter menu, so make sure you get there soon to try out some of these winners before they disappear. I’m going to list what we ate under each photo just in case something catches your eye.

This starter was insane! When it first hit our table I didn’t think I was going to like it because it had sardines on it, but I quickly changed my mind. These Fried Chicken Skin, Sardine, and Homemade Mayo bites were so good, rich, but amazing.
The dish right at the top of this post was Doenjang Glazed and Charred Beef Cheeks with truffle cauliflower puree and shaoshing braised onions. This was by far my favourite tapas of the afternoon, I’ve always seen beef cheeks on Masterchef and wondered about them, now I know why people like cooking with them.
Tempura Shimeji Mushrooms, which came with tamarind dressing and butternut puree. We all loved this tapas so much, there was literally nothing left of it! If you love mushrooms you have to order it.
Beetroot Tartare – pickled candy beetroot and raw beetroot shavings.
Crispy Dropped Black Pepper Pork Belly with tamarind dressing, butternut puree, cucumber and smoked peanuts. This was also insanely good, the pork was crispy, soft and salty and the peanuts just took it to another planet. So good!
Heart Of Rump with pickled shimeji mushrooms and miso salt. Yet another very well balanced dish, full of flavour and textures.
Teriyaki Poached Sweet Potato with goat yoghurt and pilsner honeycomb. Sounds a bit unusual, but it tasted really good.
Now these are Steamed Mosbolletjies with farm whipped butter and dukkah spice. They were also so awesome, served warm they were soft, a little spicy and the butter was like the icing on top.
Cured and Smoked Pork Neck with roast parsnip, burnt nectarine, and apple sauce. Listen you either like pork neck or you don’t, you’ll like this one, it was tender and sweet and a perfectly worked out dish.
Coal Fried Broccoli with smoked gorgonzola cream and broccoli gremolata. I don’t think broccoli has ever tasted like this before.
Mad Giant serves mini glasses of their beers so you can try them all if you like.
