Last Thursday Anna-Belle and I got flown out to Cape Town with Montblanc for the international premier of The Power of Words, an initiative which involves world-renowned filmmakers and young storytellers to interpret the words of a visionary leader. In its inaugural year, the 2014 program honoured Nelson Mandela.

We got to watch 4 very awesome films, made by 4 very awesome groups of people. One of my favourites was one called The Truth Booth – Jim Ricks and Hank Willis Thomas were part of the team that made it. Using this Mandela quote as inspiration: “The truth is that we are not yet free; we have merely achieved the freedom to be free, the right not to be oppressed.” They set up a giant inflatable speech bubble (The Truth Booth) in a few different places of the world and left it for people to enter at their own will and express their idea of what the truth is… We had lunch the next day at The Roundhouse where we got to actually go into the booth and speak our truths, which was pretty awesome. Below are some photos of The Truth Booth set up in some of the countries they visited, as well as a picture of it at The Roundhouse (thanks Jim for the pics).

– In Search of the Truth (The Truth Booth) is an installation comprised of a touring, portable, inflatable “Truth Booth” that embarked on a world tour at the Galway Arts Festival, Ireland in 2011. The exterior is ironically shaped like a giant cartoon speech bubble with the word “TRUTH” boldly printed on the side. The interior acts much like a photo booth, but serves to compile two minute long video responses from the public. Once seated inside people are invited to record their opinions and thoughts as they finish the statement: “The truth is…”.

We were not only invited to watch the films, but also to stay at the Mount Nelson Hotel, which was amazing, what a beautiful place, it’s huge and full of so much history and charisma. We also got to eat at two amazing restaurants, The Roundhouse and Tintswalo Lodge and all I can say is, wow, the food was beyond amazing.
