27 Boxes in Melville

November 24, 2017

27Boxes-in-Melville-5

Trying to find cool places around Johannesburg to take your kids isn’t the easiest thing to do, in fact, I find it quite frustrating because half of them are either cool for the kids and dismal for the parents or vice versa. I mean all I’m looking for is an awesome balance between things to do for the kids, a place that serves nice food and then a cool atmosphere to round it all up, is that too much to ask?

I haven’t been to 27 Boxes in Melville for a while so when I found out that it’s been taken on by a new development and has been given a whole new facelift, which includes new shops, restaurants, new branding and most importantly a new entertainment and play area for kids, I was really interested to check it out again, which I did last weekend and I’m happy to say that they have really done a nice job sprucing it up and there are definitely some new and improved spaces for kids which is great!

Tonic Linden

November 20, 2017

Tonic-Linden

I love gin and tonic. I do. It’s one of the most refreshing drinks around and I’ve missed them haha. Not that I’m a huge drinker, at all, but every now and then it’s so nice to just sit back and enjoy an ice cold G’nT and I know there has to be a few of you reading this and nodding in agreement.

Now I’m not the most adventurous when it comes to making gin and tonics, I mean they are usually just made up of exactly that with lots of lemon, but since visiting Tonic in Linden I’ve realised that I have been missing out on the most amazing combinations! This tiny bar which is decked out in the freshest, coolest way won me over from the second I stepped in. I’m such a sucker for interior detail and I love it when I can see that an effort has been made in every aspect and when the food/drink offering matches the decor then the place instantly becomes a favourite!

Lau’s Restaurant

October 20, 2017

Lau's-Restaurant

Ok, guys, I’m really amped to tell you guys about this specific restaurant because I feel like it’s one of those places that should be kept a secret but shouldn’t because the food is just so damn good!! If you’re a sucker for amazing traditional Chinese food made in an authentic and beyond delicious way, then keep reading.

My friend Ying took me to one of her family’s favourite places in Johannesburg called Lau’s Restaurant, located on the second floor of a weird building next to a petrol station in Rivonia! The inside of Lau’s is definitely not going to win any interior design awards, in fact, it looks a bit like a wedding venue gone wrong. Picture if you will, roundtables, off-peach and cream tablecloths and chair covers, dramatic curtains and loads and loads of fluorescent lighting. But trust me you’re not there for the decor, even though it totally adds to the whole experience in the best way, you are there for the food, which will have you dreaming about each dish you ordered every night until you go back.

Basecamp Linden

October 3, 2017

Basecamp-Linden-7

If you work for yourself like I do then you’ll know how difficult it is sometimes to actually sit at home and work, especially if your set-up is like mine and you have not one, but two sweet-faced distractions around that want your attention all the time. What’s awesome is that these days there are quite a number of really cool shared workspaces that have popped up all around Joburg that make working out of home really easy and convenient!

My friend Cherise has just recently opened up one of these great little spots in Linden called Basecamp, but what’s really awesome about her space is that when you sign up for a month or two or whatever the case is, you get your own desk and your very own set of keys, which means you are free to come and go as you please. You also have access to all their facilities which includes wifi, a skype room, meeting room, printer and kitchen which is always stocked with tea, coffee, and rusks! It’s also located directly opposite Brian Lara and The Whippet etc so if you feel like popping out for lunch all you have to do is cross the street.

Baba G

Baba G-5

Baba-G-3

New restaurant alert! I’m always so happy to put these posts up because I love new restaurants popping up especially when they’re in my neighbourhood! Everyone say hello to Baba G (short for Babaganoush). This awesomely designed little slice of chicken heaven lives in the Post Office Centre opposite Thupps and it serves some of the best damn free-range rotisserie chicken around, not to mention their Druze-style flatbreads which are made in house daily with unbleached, stone -ground flour.

Listen, this bread was so good I was considering ordering ten of them so I could fashion a duvet that I could sleep under as well as eat my way through during the night! They come with this amazingly fragrant Thyme, Sesame and Lemon Salt Zaatar, which was the perfect accompaniment.

Ono eatery

August 3, 2017

So once again a brand new cool little restaurant has opened up in Illovo and this time it’s not even down the road from me, it’s literally across it and it serves the most delicious poke and breakfast bowls and shakes! Ono Eatery has just opened its doors and behind them, you will find the cutest little restaurant complete with wooden swing chairs in the window and a pretty banana leaf canopy made out of white metal that hangs over an olive green banquette.

I follow quite a few foodie Instagrammers, like Morning_Temptations (follower her, she’s amazing) who make the most awesome looking breakfast bowls and I always think to myself – Damn if only I lived in that person’s spare room, or under their bed so I can just pop into the kitchen in the morning after they have made and photographed their creation for the day and be like ‘Hey dude, I’ll eat that for you if you don’t want it’.
