Bicycle Portraits by Stan Engelbrecht and Nic Grobler

My friends Stan and Nic are hosting a Bicycle Portraits Johannesburg book launch, exhibit & city ride on the 20th of July, one of the stops is going to be at our new coffee shop in Braamfontein, Father. It’s going to be super fun and you’re going to get to see some pretty cool photography. These books, if you haven’t seen them are full of such interesting people and stories and such awesome photography, any coffee table would be beside itself to be friends with them.

So if you are looking for something fun and out of the ordinary to do on Saturday the 20th, dust off your bike and your tight pant and join in. If you stop by the shop please come say hello hi.

Deer Dana

July 5, 2013

When I was in Japan I bought one of these very cool Deer Dana t-shirts from an Opening Ceremony store. They had about 5 different faces to choose from and I went for Grace Kelly, but now that I have Googled them and checked out all their other designs, I’m lusting after a Lil Wayne one. After watching a documentary about Lil Wayne I became a huge fan, he’s pretty damn amazing and even though I think all these t-shirts are pretty damn amazing, I’m liking him and Terry Richardson the most. Terry, only one of the best photographers ever. Ever.

– Ranging from Prince Harry and Dolly Parton to Lil Wayne and Kim K, the faces on Deer Dana’s T-shirts amount to a twenty-first century hall of fame. Working in NYC, designers Dana Veraldi and Kevin Tekinel have hand-drawn a roster of some of our most diehard celebrity obsessions.

Kai Samuels-Davis

March 22, 2013

Came across these beautiful and sensitive paintings by Kai Samuels-Davis. He is a New York born artist currently living and working in Jenner, CA. His portraits are so intriguing, it’s like each person in them has heard something super sad that they can’t share it with anyone but themselves which makes them so interesting to look at.

– When my wife Clare and I moved to Bodega Bay I was able to rent an old barn around the corner from our apartment on Windy Lane. It was a great studio space with tall beamed ceilings and wood/concrete floors. It got cold during the winter but it was worth it. That was the first proper studio I ever had.

We moved to Jenner about a year and a half later but the name stuck. My studio now is the bottom floor of the house we are renting, the ceilings aren’t as tall but it has insulation, a wood plank floor and a view of the Russian River and Pacific ocean, so no complaints! I’ve been in this space for about a year now and my paintings have grown more than ever, it’s been a wonderful place to work.

Art art I heart thee.

September 17, 2012

I came across this cool site that has a bunch of very talented artists on it so I thought I would share some of their work with you. First up is Jeana Sohn who was born and raised in a small village called Hyoja in a small city called Pohang in a small country called Korea.

All of these pieces except for the rock are painted on wood.

Then check out these amazing paper dolls by artist Claire Oswalt. I think these are just magical, I love the groups made up of the same people.

These ink drawing are by Kyle Field who has been drawing for his whole life. He intends to keep drawing, making forts or costumes or dolls.

And finally the work of Frohawk Two Feathers who was born in Chicago in 1976.
