Smile, you’re in black and white in Japan.

We took my Olympus Pen E-P3 that I won a while back with us to Japan and Shane set it to a very grainy black and white effect which he decided to document the whole trip in. The photos are a bit sandy in texture and soft, but I really like how they came out. We took a bunch of photos and I decided to choose just a few for this post that I think sum up the general feeling of the trip.

I’m making a book similar to the Instagram one Shane made me for my birthday last year. It’s going to have all the photos we all took on our trip. I’m busy working on it now, you know i’m going to blog about it here and you will probably be sick of hearing about Japan by then, but just humour me (insert smiley face here). A thank you xxxxx

A nice sunday with friends, Elvis and the Winter Sculpture fair.

Winter-Sculpture-fair-16

Yesterday Shane, Leigh, Brad, Jake and I went to the Mastercard Winter Sculpture Fair out a the NIROX Sculpture Park. Judging from the huge amount of people that attended I would say that it was a roaring success. It was so nice to be out in the sun with friends, good wine and pork belly. They had a bunch of food and wine stalls there that had some pretty tasty things up for offer and the grounds themselves are beautiful, they were green and well looked after and some of the sculptures on show were amazing. Now I’m no art buff, so I appreciated only some of the pieces, others my little mind just couldn’t or rather wouldn’t let me hit the ‘like’ button, I just didn’t get the idea or the sentiment behind them, they were just there filling space, but in the same token there were some that were super cool and interesting, so the art balanced itself out and I was happy. There were also some really nice things to buy there, buy I managed to restrain myself from running up my credit card. Good Angie, good.

Weekend and cats

fuji-instax-6

This weekend Shane and I went to Dullstroom for our friends combined birthday party. We spent the weekend on a beautiful farm that had the most amazing views, with grass and mountains for days. There were about 24 of us altogether and there were a lot of card games, chops, drinks, potjies, music, chocolate, flings and fun.

Every now and then getting out of the city is the best thing for you. I think it should be done at least once a month. Yes please.

Zim Zala Bim

May 25, 2012

Desmond and the Tutus have just released their second single called Zim Zala Bim, which is one of my MOST favourite songs on their new album. But don’t take my word for it, have a listen for yourself and then let me know what you think and if you feel like it, you can give them some love on their Facebook page.

The boys were shooting their second music video for this album on Tuesday and I popped past to say hi. We got to see the final thing last night and damn is it cool. So here is the song and a shot I took of the set when I went to visit. As soon as I can, I’m going to post the video up, it came out so super rad.

Hanro, the guy who shot the video for them, took this picture of Shane and I for his ‘500 Days of This’ project, which I blogged about a little while ago. You should also check that out if you haven’t already, it’s well worth your time. I’m so chuffed that I made it into the series heee. As you can see, the boys have featured quite alot.

April Deacon

March 29, 2012

April-Deacon

This is the work of Ohio based artist April Deacon. I like her idea of painting something new onto something old. April, in her own words, says that she takes discarded memories, then reinvents them – there is something so sweet and sad about that.

– Antique photographs reflect the mortality of people and things.  They capture the inevitability and reliability of deterioration that I respect, but that results in an unnatural desire to resurrect them, that I cannot suppress.  The sadness in the realization that these people have been forgotten on some level and the symbols of their memories discarded to be found by me, a stranger, proves overwhelming.  Each image contains secrets and truths.  Influenced by the mood of the photograph, I choose a color palette. In addition to color, I use shape and pattern, which are informed by the natural contours and existing value contrasts, to transform each subject.
