A little while back I saw some of Dani Loureiro’s amazing laser cut typographic work on Instagram and at an art fair in Joburg and I was blown away by it. And so this year for mine and Shane’s 6th year wedding anniversary, I decided to commission this local designer to make me a wooden typography piece as a gift for Shane. I came up with a saying ‘forever now then & always’ (these words hold special meaning to us both), she then laid it out in a font that she hand designed and then had it laser cut into the very awesome and intricate piece of art below. It came out amazingly, just like I imagined it would and I was so damn excited to give it to Shane, because he absolutely loves beautifully thought out and executed typography.
I have a very talented friend called Johnny Neon who draws like no ones business. He is so good and so fast at drawing (I’ve had the pleasure of watching him draw) that it makes me want to punch him the neck whenever I see him because I wish I had half the amount of drawing skill in one finger.
My super talented friend Greg Rom formally of Humanoid has just started his own company called Gentlemen Films. Johnny Kotze created his logo then my partner in ‘design crime’ Nicholas Christowitz created all his collateral. They created stamps, showreels, the website, comp slips, letterheads. The illustrations are based around the concept of “A gentleman always…” I think it came out just spiffy.
* These are 3 very talented local guys and I would encourage you all to check out their work if you have some time. You won’t be sorry xx
This is some of the design work of Johnny Kotze, who is not only one of the most talented illustrators I have ever met (this guy is like some kind of drawing machine. I think if Johnny was in my art class when I was in kindergarden, I would of pushed him off the top of the slide every chance I got), but also a great musician too, who has a very cool band called Johnny Neon. To read more about him and to check out more of his work, click through to my interview with him on itswhatiminto.
On Saturday we opened a mini Wolves at the Str Cred party happening in town. For the event Shane and I actually arranged for 20 different artists to design a t-shirt and then Wolves, together with Wrigley’s 5 Gum had them made into real life. The collection is crazy amazing guys! We got some really cool people to draw us stuff and I was so proud to have our shop’s name on the lable. And here is the raddest part, there is only a limited edition of 21 t-shirts per design available, so once they have sold, that’s it.
We sold a few on Saturday, but the rest will be hanging up in Wolves, so come have a look for yourself. Thanks to everyone who came to say hi on Saturday, to all the artists (you guys are to genius), to Wrigleys and to everyone who helped make mini Wolves happen, thank you, thank you, thank you x xxx
*To see the shirts bigger, just click on the photo, you will also see the artist’s name on the lable opposite the shirt. And they are R200 each, in case you were wondering.
