Quite a few years ago I bought my very first real piece of art from a gallery in Cape Town. It was this Richard Heart print entitled “who ever you want me to be”. I was so desperate to own one of his original paintings that were on sale that night, but they were a bit too pricey for me back then. Even the framed print was quite a bit, but I loved it and I’m so happy I bought it because it started my obsession with art.
The other day I went to Anthea Pokroy’s photographic exhibition called I collect gingers at The Circa Gallery. It’s an interesting show made up of 500 photographs, but after I stared at each ginger-haired participant in the face I started to feel quite watched, it was bizarre.
I went into the Stevenson Gallery the other day, to see the Conrad Botes’s exhibition called Zombie Babylon that is up at the moment. It’s made up of a whole lot of small paintings that tell a very dark tale, 2 very interesting and quite scary sculptures and a series of large very vibrant paintings of iconic images. It’s a great show and it’s so much better in person than it is in photographs, so if you have some free time go on by, closes after the 15th of December, so hurry.
I have just posted up pictures of a local furniture exhibition I went to in Joburg at the Maker gallery on Jan Smuts. Check it out on itswhatiminto.
Southern Guild – Everard Read Gallery Johannesburg
August 31, 2012
The other day I went to go visit the Everard Read Gallery, which is currently hosting the Southern Guild 2012 collection which showcases Top Contemporary SA Design. I was blown away by some of the pieces. Unfortunately I couldn’t really afford to buy anything, plus the painting I loved the most had no price, but instead had a black sticker on it, which probably means “don’t even think about it”.
Went to a very cool exhibition in town the other day called Gold, which is a collaborative show by Jana+Koos and Adele Prins. I’ve posted all their pieces up on itswhatiminto. It closes on the 13th of July, you should try swing past if you can xx
