A new exhibition started at Wolves on Friday night called Locals Only. The idea is really simple and super cool and I think some really awesome stuff has come out of it. Four different artists were invited from Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town to design a poster inspired by the city that they live in. Each place was given a colour pallet and off they went.
Johannesburg – teal and red. Durban – Yellow and purple. Cape town – orange and blue.
This is a book put together by an artist called SkullBoy who is a graphic designer, illustartor and curator based in Durban. I first met him a few months ago when he curated the Locals Only exhibition at Wolves. We bumped into each other again 2 days ago and before he left he gave Shane and I a copy of his latest project, which is a book that includes a collection of stories of anonymous participants’ sexual debuts – the circumstances, scenarios, emotions, celebrations and tragedies of how they came to lose virginity’s.
In January Shane and I also went to Zimbabwe to see my folks for a few days. Bulawayo is still such a magical place, the buildings and old houses are amazing. When I was a younger and my parents lived here, we used to go pretty much every year on holiday to see family. My parents moved back there a couple of years ago, so it’s nice to be able to spend some time again with locals.
