Cool Spaces: Our black bathroom

December 3, 2013

black bathroom

A while back I blogged about a bunch of black and white bathrooms that I had found on various sites. Shane and I were dead keen to make our new bathroom black too, so we pulled out the existing bathroom, we pulled out the exisiting cupboards in our main bedroom, to make the bathroom a bit bigger and we set to work.

I thought I would give you all a break down of what’s in our bathroom, in case anything takes your fancy and you want to know where stuff is from:

° The first thing we wanted was a original, genuine victorian cast iron bath, I looked around on the net a bit, but we weren’t really having any luck, all we were finding were imitation ones that cost a flipping fortune. Then I found Maria, this glorious lady who salvages old baths, fireplaces, sinks, you name it, she saves it from old houses being torn down. She then lovingly refurbishes them and sells them. Unfortunately she had to close her shop down, due to the neighbourhood going bad, but I’m sure if you had to contact her she would be able to help you out.

° We then wanted a sink to match the era of the bathroom, so Shane took me to this amazing salvage yard (will find out where it is). We looked around for a bit and came out with 2 sinks for both bathrooms. The one below still has a stamp on the bottom telling us that it was made in the 1940’s. We also found our bathroom door there, we picked up an old, what looks like a garden shed door and gave it a fresh coat of paint. Shane then built a sliding rail for it.

° The beautiful photo above our bath is by a very talented young photographer called Leonard Miller.

° The light fixture is something that I have had for ages, it’s an original art deco piece and we thought a pop of pink might be pretty cool in this room.

° The mirror I also bought at a strange antique shop in Howick called Bloo Monkey, you should definitely check it out if you’re ever that side of town. The mirror was attached to a vintage dresser, which I landed up giving to Stubs.

° The honeycomb tiles we used in the bathroom are awesome to look at, not so awesome to work with, they’re small and a bit finicky, but we got there in the end and we’re very happy with the end result. Can’t remember exactly which tile shop we got them from, but we saw them in a couple of places, so if you are looking for them, you should be good.

° The steel bath holder that goes across the bath I picked up at Mr Price, I’m very chuffed with that and I bought the awesome black and white bathroom rug from Country Road.

Here’s a shot of what our bathroom looked like before…
