Just over 9 weeks ago I started a fitness journey with Futurelife that involved me training and getting ready to run the Old Mutual Soweto 10k Marathon, which was something I didn’t picture myself ever doing. Running definitely has not formed part of my life for years and years but I had been looking for a challenge to jumpstart my non-existent exercise routine since having Rex and when the opportunity came along to work with Futurelife to get me 10km ready I excitedly and nervously jumped on board.
Like everything that you start from scratch the beginning is always the hardest part! In my case, my body was as confused as my mind as to why I was outside going round and round a field for 50 minutes every second day. I think it had gotten used to the idea of me not exercising anymore seeing as the last time I did any form of it was over a year ago!
I started training three times a week with Run Walk For Life, in the beginning, I wasn’t doing much running obviously, but gradually all the walking I was doing started turning into light jogging and then eventually my jogging turned into running. Every day I got more and more excited as I felt my body strengthen and I managed to cover a bit more ground. There is nothing quite like the feeling.
The race itself crept up on me in no time at all but on the day I was so super excited because I was surrounded by so many people! The atmosphere was electrifying and the support that everyone in the race gives one another is something else. I had the best time and it made up for all the training sessions where I’d look down at my watch and think ‘holy moly I’ve only been going for 13 minutes, how the blazers am I going to do this on the day!’. But I did do it in one hour and twenty-two minutes and it felt amazing during as well after the race. I mean sure my legs were sore the next day as I wobbled around like a bowl of unset raspberry jelly, but it was so worth it.
This whole adventure has got me wanting to do more exercise. It’s quite a thing when you realise that your body can do something that you didn’t think it could and I really like that feeling, a lot! If you guys have any cool exercise classes or workout ideas that you’d like to share, please do so, I’d love to hear about them. I’m actually really keen to start squash, I’ve played a couple of times before and I loved it! I think it’s because I’m naturally quite competitive and in squash, you get to be happily aggressive, which is awesome if that makes sense ha!
Lastly, I’d like to say thanks to everyone who supported me through this journey, you guys are the best and every like, comment and message I received really meant a lot to me and thanks to Futurelife for helping me along the way, I may or may not be addicted to your Chocolate flavoured Smart Food!
Thanks, Futurelife for the photos.
