Garbage Pail Kids

September 23, 2010

Cal from Fable Fairy had this great idea that she mailed me about the other day – she thought it would be cool for a few of us to do a post about some of our childhood toys that we still have. So in honor of Heritage Day a bunch of us have hauled out some of favourites to share with you. Here is mine:

This is my original Garbage Pail Kid collection from when I was a wee child. Every time I look at them I remember the exact feeling they gave me when the school bell rang and this bundle, that was obviously bound together with a strained elastic band, came out my blazer pocket and onto the playground.

We would play for the whole of break time (both breaks) and I remember when my mom used to come pick my brother and I up, there was a cafe across the road from our school, so every now and then we would get to go buy fresh ones, ones that smelt exactly like the bubblegum that came in their wrappers. A smell that would only last a short while, thanks to our sweaty little hands flipping them over and over on the carpet all afternoon long. Oh man why can’t life be simple like this again? Gone are the days when a few pieces of cardboard with deformed baby demons printed on them used to be all that we needed to make us happy.

What are some of the toys that you still have from when you were 2 foot 7 inches tall?

Oh, so many! I remember my friends and I used to have “trading season” once a year where we would all bring in our favorite little toys and trade them around with everyone… I got the BEST loot from that 😉

ooh, late eighties, i was not allowed to have garbage pail kid cards. i still resent my mother a little bit when i see those cards. i was the girl standing outside the circle in the playground, watching girls like you angie getting to swop cards with each other…wishing i could join in. and i know the kind of well worn buddle you are referring too. makes me think of how my mother used to give me a big one rand coin for tuckshop on friday….i used to think it was so big and precious i would take it school in a ring box, and buy stinky creole chips and sherbet. i did however have a lot of cabbage patch kids (which the garbage pail kids are loosely based on) happy hoilday x
