Sophie Woodrow – ceramics

March 10, 2014

These crazy-awesome ceramic creations are by Bristol born Sophie Woodrow. Now you know how much I love ceramic creatures, so I was very amped to find these weird and wonderful guys staring back at me from my computer last night – They look like something Tim Burton would make if he took up pottery as a hobby.

– Sophie’s sculptures are not visitors from other worlds, but the ‘might-have-beens’ of this world. She seeks to assemble creatures from the strange notions of what we define as ‘nature’ and of each other as people – as ‘other’.

Mrs. Wolf will huff and puff and bite your house down.

March 15, 2013

Jo-face came to visit me the other night and bought me little present as a surprise. A little parcel that contained the most beautiful faced wolf I have ever seen, ever. She’s made from a coconut shell and crazy imagination and whoever made her is some kind of genius.

Her teeth make me the most happy, they are like a bunch of candy cigarettes having a party.

She reminds me of Chibocoronono, the wooden weird dog sculpture we found in Mozambique. They make such a good pair.

Thanks Jo-face, you’re the best xx

GIVEAWAY: Room Online

August 13, 2012

My friend  Natasha Stone together with Anne Bouwer run and own Room Online, which is a great local online store that stocks the sweetest things from wooden cake stands, to Honest chocolate to rabbit adorned pillow cases to ceramics to tea towels etc. Their little store has all sorts of things that will make perfect gifts for your friends/family or yourself and the best part is that they are all for speedy delivery. So you see something, you order it and Bob’s your Uncle, it’s at your front door. Nice hey?

– when it comes to craft and design, too often the fruits of the independent designer’s creativity remain hidden away in tiny studios and backrooms, where few can appreciate or acquire these precious gems. this is especially true in south africa, where independent designers typically don’t have the budget or resources to market their goods on a large scale. Room Online hopes to change all that.

The ladies at Room Online have been very nice and given me TWO of these amazing pillows (below) to giveaway to 2 of you guys. And all you have to do is to win either a Kwepie Doll or a rabbit cushion is:

1. Let me know which pillow you want to smother your face into as well as what other item you like from their online store – www.roomonline.co.za

2. Follow them on Twitter @roomonline

3. If you blog or retweet this competition, let me know in your comment and I will enter you again

4. This giveaway is open to absolutely everyone locally and internationally and it will end on the 27th of August 2012

Ceramic love

August 6, 2012

This is the work of Debra Broz and I guess  I don’t have to tell you why I like them. They are made of my 2 most favourite things, ceramic and animal. I think she would have a field day with my collection, which is now well over 120 animals. This series is called Oddities and all the works are made from found and/or acquired ceramic objects.

 – Debra Broz’s work is most often about finding connections between fragments. Using found objects and images, she extracts meaning through anthropomorphism, context, language and memory. Informed by processes like genetic mutation, symbiotic relationships, grafting and DNA manipulation her works also reflect her love for black humor, subversion, and anomalies.

Found a few other cool ceramic things I thought I would include in this post. These pretty gold topped ceramic milk bottles can be bought here.

Hanna Ernsting is responsible for this knife-block shaped like a rabbit. Too cool.

I also love these milk bottle measuring cups from Anthropologie.

These cute mountain peak sweet bowls are amazing. My coffee table would look awesome with one of these guys on it.

Knife plate anyone?

Tick tock. Where do you come for?

April 5, 2012

I bought this pair of cuckoo clocks from a junk store for R15 each. Their eyes move from side to side when they are wound up and working. Has anyone seen these guys before? The reason i’m asking is because I once saw them in quite a fancy and well-stocked antique store in Cape Town, they were in a cabinet with no price, but the owner of the place was so unfriendly and unhelpful that I didn’t have the guts or teh energy to go ask him about them.

I would love any information…anyone have any stories for me?
