Near the end of last year, I had myself a little baby shower with some of my nearest and dearest friends. In my head I knew I wanted to have it somewhere beautiful (obviously) and I wanted it to be a high-tea sort of affair. There are quite a few places around Joburg that do high-teas, but I didn’t want to be surrounded by other people, I wanted it to be just us. Luckily for me I landed up stumbling across a place in Ferndale called Burkleigh House, a luxury guesthouse that just so happens to have an amazing garden and an amazing high-tea.
So thanks to one of bestest friends Jo, we put together exactly what I had in my head, a baby shower that was full of colour, full of tasty things to eat and set in a place that makes you wish you could live outdoors forever.
Now I’m not one for if you’re having a baby boy everything has to be blue and if you’re having a girl everything has to be pink. I have never been and never will be so my baby shower was pretty colourful. How awesome is the balloon garland that Jo made?! I also wanted everyone to leave with a little something from me, so we got some Consol jars and filled them to the top with all sorts of treats, which worked really well as a thank you token as well as decorations for the table.
I had such an awesome time just hanging with my friends, WATCHING them drink champagne, haha, I compensated by having extra tidbits from the high-tea selection. Oh yes, I did. The pastry chef at Burkleigh House made us mini Oreo cheesecakes, mille-feuilles with chantilly cream, cranberry scones with lavender whipped cream, candied citrus zest meringues, Queen’s sandwiches, smoked salmon and crème fraiche roses and more! Listing some of these things now is making me so hungry.
If you follow my blog you will know that I’m all for supporting local small businesses, so I’d love to give a special shout out to Burkleigh House, you guys made my day extra special and I couldn’t have asked for anything more. If any of you are looking for an extra special wedding venue or a spot for a birthday picnic (they make incredible picnic baskets) or just an excuse to abandon your daily routine for a night, you should really swing past this lovely establishment it’s like a hidden gem sitting right under your nose.
Jo face, my friend I’d also like to thank you for all your hard work in helping put this shindig together and to all my friends I just want you to know that I think you are wonderful and you all make me so happy!
