Sometimes all I feel like doing is stuffing my face with a magnificent custard doughnut. Ok, hang on let me rephrase that, every day I feel like stuffing my face with a magnificent custard doughnut or two. The problem with feeling like this all the time is that not many places around here sell pastries that you will literally jump through fiery hoops for, well that is until now!
It’s with great pleasure that I would like to introduce you to Shakil who owns and runs a wonderful bakery called Tonka Bean Bakery where he makes and sells artisan baked goods that are made using classic French methods, really good ingredients and a whole lot of love.
I first tasted Tonka Beans creations at Father Coffee in Rosebank and have since been completely hooked. So the other day I took a drive out to them in Fourways to meet the genius behind probably the best custard doughnut I have ever tasted! Hands down. I’m talking the type of doughnut you’d prefer to be alone with so you can eat it in private with no one around to judge your table manners or ask you for a bite!!
On arrival, my friend Hannah and I were greeted with smiles and table full of baked goods, which we immediately made a beeline for, it was like we had never seen cake before! Waiting for us were Vanilla Custard Doughnuts, Vanilla Croissants, Sweedish Buns, Chocolate Fudge Brownies, Chocolate Doughnuts and Almond Croissants. So in other words, we were smack bang in the middle of pastry heaven. The only thing that I was disappointed about was that wasn’t wearing pants with an elasticated waist.
I’m not going to lie, every single thing we sampled was amazing and when Shakil bought out takeaway boxes for us afterward with extra goodies inside them we didn’t say no.
Tonka Bean Bakery is owned by one of the nicest people I have ever met who takes a lot of pride in what he does and what he puts out there. This little business is definitely and without a doubt going places and I can’t wait for them to become a household name. For now though if you’d like to get your hands onto some of his creations you can find them at Father Coffee, The Fourways Farmers Market, Rivers Church in Sandton and at their store in the Riversands Incubation Hub, William Nicol Dr and Rose Road, Johannesburg. You can also mail them for orders here – firstname.lastname@example.org | email@example.com
PS: There is a future Tonka Bean food truck in the making too, which I’m super excited about. I’m going to follow that thing around like a crazed stalker on a sugar high.
