So you’re sitting at your desk, in the bath, in your kitchen thinking about what you’re going to make for supper. You could make spaghetti bolognese again, I mean everyone loves your spaghetti bolognese or what about roast chicken, that’s easy enough or perhaps everyone can fend for themselves tonight in your house and have Marmite sandwiches! What if I told you about a place that not only will have you chowing down on a delicious meal by the end of the night but will also have you learning how to make it too, so that spaghetti bolognese doesn’t have to be your only go-to recipe. Sound good?
Just recently I went to a new establishment in Johannesburg called The Cookery by the secret Jozi Chef owned by Paul, one of the same people who own and run Pronto, one of the best Italian restaurants in Joburg, so you know you’re in good hands.
Paul together with his co-chef Milo have come up with a cracking idea whereby you get to learn how to cook whilst hanging out with friends in a very cool looking kitchen set-up that has space for numerous groups to participate as well as an awesome section with a dinner table where everyone can sit afterwards and eat together like one big happy family that don’t look anything like one another.
Here is another cool thing about this idea, they’re themed so if you’re into Italian, Spanish or even Thai food they have you covered. You can check out their up and coming classes here and then book which ever one makes you want to jump up and down on the spot.
I went with Anna-Belle to a Thai cooking evening where we learnt how to make two different kinds of curry, from scratch. It was actually so awesome! That was the first time I had ever made my own curry paste and it totally inspired me to always keep making my own paste, because it’s so much better! I even tried it again a few weeks later when I made my first ever Thai Green Coconut Chicken Curry at home, which came out really well even if I do say so myself.
So if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary to do by yourself, or with friends (it’s always more fun with friends) then seriously check this place out. It’s a lot of fun and a such an awesome way to expand your culinary skills as well as stuff your face. They also host private events, in fact I just recently had my birthday dinner there, we all sat at a long table and Paul and Milo cooked around us and fed us some of the most delicious food while we chatted up a storm. It was awesome!
You can find them in The Colony Centre on Jan Smuts, just under Pronto.
