I realised that I haven’t really written many posts on our house and what we have done to it since moving in and renovating. I’ve posted about our bathroom revamp, but today I thought I would show you guys our living room and all it’s trinkets.
So here it is…
These crazy-awesome ceramic creations are by Bristol born Sophie Woodrow. Now you know how much I love ceramic creatures, so I was very amped to find these weird and wonderful guys staring back at me from my computer last night – They look like something Tim Burton would make if he took up pottery as a hobby.
– Sophie’s sculptures are not visitors from other worlds, but the ‘might-have-beens’ of this world. She seeks to assemble creatures from the strange notions of what we define as ‘nature’ and of each other as people – as ‘other’.
A few months back a young lady by the name of Amber mailed to ask me if I would be keen to be a part of her university project. She was designing a zine that was all about people and their collections. She came around to my house to interview me and take pictures of my ceramic animal collection so that she could illustrate them at a later stage.
I met her, we chatted, I smiled for some photographs and then a few days ago she sent me the finished product and I love it. It’s such a cool little piece and I think she has done a pretty damn good job at designing it.
Thanks Amber for thinking of me and for drawing me and my ceramics so beautifully. Amber is also going to send me a hardcopy, which I’m going to keep till I’m old and buried under my inevitable future collection of 6378 ceramic animals. Sorry Shanie.

This is the work of Debra Broz and I guess I don’t have to tell you why I like them. They are made of my 2 most favourite things, ceramic and animal. I think she would have a field day with my collection, which is now well over 120 animals. This series is called Oddities and all the works are made from found and/or acquired ceramic objects.
– Debra Broz’s work is most often about finding connections between fragments. Using found objects and images, she extracts meaning through anthropomorphism, context, language and memory. Informed by processes like genetic mutation, symbiotic relationships, grafting and DNA manipulation her works also reflect her love for black humor, subversion, and anomalies.

On Saturday I went to the annual antique fair at the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria. As always it was a vintage feast for my eyes. Everywhere I looked I was surrounded by things that made me happy like, a ginned up granny in a packed bingo hall.
I found this artist via ninù’s pinboard. Her name is Nathalie Choux. I can’t understand anything that she writes under each of her posts, but I do understand that she is really good at making beautiful things. The bear with the party hat on is my favourite.
