Antique finds16. April 2013
Here are the few things I bought at the Benoni Antique Fair on Sunday.
1. This little gold brooch, which I thought was super cute with it’s bow and summer hat.
2. A vintage Tala tin egg holder, which I have never seen before.
3. The white cat which is actually an old perfume bottle from Avon, why oh why can’t everything come packaged in some sort of cat wrapping? I bought that piece for Jo because she collects white ornaments.
4. I found only ONE chained animal family, I thought I might come away with a least 2, but I didn’t. At least I found one that I don’t already have. The white cats are now very at home in my crazy ornaments cabinet.
5. Jo bought me the metal Bambi which is actually an ashtray, apparently you pop the cigarette into it’s chest and the smoke comes out it’s mouth.
Amber Smith I hate you, I love you.11. December 2012
Do you guys remember a post I did a while back on one Miss Amber Smith? She asked me if I would like to be a part of a zine she was designing as part of a university project. If you don’t, just click here to see what an amazing job she did. The whole idea was centered around people’s collections. She came and took photos of me with my many ceramic animals and then asked me a few questions about my unhealthy obsession with them. She also interviewed a guy that collects slinkies, watches, knives and a lady who collects crystal animals.
Well anyway last night whilst I was standing outside Wolves just before I was heading out for dinner, a figure appeared out of the darkness, it was Amber carrying a brown paper bag with my name on it. She handed it to me and in a few seconds she was gone. I was not expecting her and now I wish I had the chance to look into the packet before she disappeared so that I could show her how damn excited I was about the contents.
Amber dropped off a physical copy of the zine that she put together by hand. It’s wonderful, it’s so beautifully crafted and lovingly made up and it’s sitting proudly on my coffee table as I type this. She also gave me a set of postcards that she designed of crazy looking circus folk. They are beyond amazing. They are so detailed and the content and colour pallet is beautiful. She also made me 3 brooches, 2 from broken plates (which I love) and one of a bony hand, which is so much fun!
Amber you really are one talented young lady and I’m so glad that you randomly picked me out to be one of your subjects, because now I get to enjoy and collect your more than awesome work.
I have asked Amber if she will do a solo show at Wolves and she said yes with a smile. I’m so super excited to see what she’s going to create for the space and don’t worry I will warn you all so that you can come see her stuff up close, because it’s so worth your time.
Thanks again Amber, you really made my week xxx
The hunt.29. March 2012
On Sunday Stubs and I went to Kensington for a bit of an antique hunt. I bought about 15 beautiful antique plates for the shop, which are all hiding in the photos below. And then I bought these pretty pieces of costume jewelry for myself. I think I really scored in the loot departement. Man, coming home with shiny things is the best.
I thought I would try on all my preciouses. My poor blue shirt was like a wounded pin cushion after this exercise. Shampies.
Today feels like Winter.15. March 2012
When I was in Cape Town for Gina’s wedding a little while back the girls and I went shopping one day for fun and to see how much money we could spend on unnecessary things – that’s always the best kind of shopping ha!
Anyway, Marina and Karen spotted this little fella and knew to call me over immediately. He was in my sweaty little hands before I could even say ” oooooooh what a sweet little brooch”.
So seeing as today felt quite Wintery, I thought I would whip him out for a little collar action. I’m quite looking forward to Winter, I have many collars and many things to attach to them.Anyone looking forward to be a bit of cold?
