Kalashnikovv Gallery – LOVE AND HATE & MIXED EMOTIONS

February 18, 2013

Kalashnikovv-Gallery--17

On Saturday I went to the Kalashnikovv Gallery at 70 Juta in Braamfontien. They are running a show called LOVE AND HATE & MIXED EMOTIONS which is made up of new work by Black Koki and Ello as well as some very cool pieces from 10 young, visionary artists.

Shane and I bought 5 pieces in total. The set of illustrated houses below by one of my most favourite artists Jean de Wet and a really cool hand painted plate made by Black Koki.  If you would like to see the full show you can check out my post on itswhatiminto.

Another artist that I only discovered on Saturday but that I really really like is Marcel Marcel. He’s a Johannesburg based illustrator that draws pictures of things that make my childhood memories come galloping to the present day. I have included some of his work in this post. The Robo Cop below (which is A1 in size by the way) was at the gallery, but it had already sold. Damn.

His work reminds me of a comic-struck teenager who hopes that he too will one day be bitten by a radio active spider so that he can sew himself up a red and blue lycra suit, which he will squeeze himself into before chucking himself off a high building in pursuit of baddies.

Marcel your work is super cool. I like it a lot.
