MR-BIG-STUFF

MAC AND CHEESE BURGER-3

This post is about one of the most creative things I have worked on all year and one that I’m really, really proud of. I’d like to introduce you all to our brand new restaurant Mr Big Stuff. Shane, Craig and myself have just opened up this diner/take-out joint in Braamfontein and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. I’ve always imagined that this would be the kind of shop that you would perhaps come across in Japan, something fun and quirky, something that would make you smile, it makes me smile so hopefully it’ll have the same effect on you.

Our menu is full of things that are good for you in the worst/best kind of way. So if you’re in the mood for say a homemade 100% beef patty cheeseburger with our secret Mr Big Stuff sauce, that doesn’t require a knife and fork, just your hands and face, or a mac ‘n cheese burger (yes that is a hamburger with a slab of mac and cheese on it), or a waffle stack served with crispy fried chicken and mustard syrup then we’re your shop. We also have a bunch of other things on the menu like deep fried mac ‘n cheese squares, disco fries (fries topped with cheese sauce and bacon bits), salads and wraps, if you don’t feel like burgers or fried chicken. We also have a bunch of delicious waffles with toppings like apple pie filling, Nutella etc we also have one that is just like a banana split. I mean I could go on and on, but instead I’m going to invite you to come try us out for yourself.

Vicky Cristina’s

vicky-cristinas-6

A little while ago Anna-Belle and I went to Vicky Cristina’s in the The Colony Shopping Centre. It was my first time visiting this restaurant as I’m always popping into Pronto (one of my favourite places to eat) when I’m in that area, but I’m glad I tried it out.

Vicky Cristina’s feels more like a night time spot then a day time one, as the colour scheme is predominantly black and red, but their food is good and I can imagine that it tastes the same day or night. The menu boasts a large variety of tapas meals, but it does have some full meals on it to.

Tortellino D’Oro

On Sunday Jo took me to one of her favourite restaurants near Norwood for lunch, Tortellino D’Oro. I had never heard of this place before so I was keen to try it out, plus they are an authentic Italian restaurant with all homemade pastas and sauces.

So off we went and damn was I pretty much licking my plate by the end of it. This Italian/deli restaurant is not cheap, but their food is so good that you’ll be pretty much humming between each bite whilst waving your fork around in the air like a crazy person, well at least that’s what I was doing. We were one of only a couple of tables when we arrived, but with in a matter of 15 minutes the place was packed, so I take it booking is essential.

Sushi in Japan

sushi-bar

On our first night in Japan our host took us to one of her favourite sushi restaurants. Everything about this place was so cool, it was exactly how you would picture a Japanese sushi restaurant to look and the food was good and plentiful.

This place had some crazy looking pieces of fish going around the conveyor belt. I ate a few things that I had never tried before, but I drew the line at the giant looking snails, they were a bit too weird for my liking.

Slappy Cakes in Tokyo

June 20, 2013

slappy-cakes-9

When we were in Tokyo we went to such an awesome restaurant called Slappy Cakes, which not only had the raddest name, but was also such a fun place to eat in. You see their tables are not like ordinary tables, because they have big rectangle hotplates in the middle so that you can cook your own pancakes any way you like them! Apparently you get these kind of places in America.

So what you do is order the type of pancake batter you want and then whatever ingredients you feel like going into your pancakes, like bacon, chocolate chips, nuts, fruit, Nutella, well you get the picture. I ordered lavender honey, whipped cream and HOMEMADE Nutella and then I proceeded to stuff my pie-hole.

I’m not sure if you are all aware of the fact that I have just opened up a new roastery in Braamfontein called Father with 3 of my friends, Barry, Nick and Chad. We have been planning this shop for the last few months and now it’s all ready and open and we’re so excited about it. It’s only 3 weeks old, but so far the feedback has been super good, which is really great.
